Introduction to Marine Dynamics by Armin W Troesch

Master the fundamentals of complex marine systems with this introduction to marine dynamics, vibrations, hydrodynamics, and stochastic processes. It connects key theoretical concepts, including as the velocity potential, impulsive force and L'H pital's Rule, to real-world marine engineering applications such as such as marine platform dynamics, extreme motions and exceedance probabilities, and includes over 60 multi-part end-of-chapter problems, building from simplified questions to advanced exercises, enabling students to grow in confidence towards solving complex questions. Students will gain a deep understanding effective design and safe operation of offshore systems and ocean resources; and is supported by downloadable Matlab code, and online solutions for instructors. Including over 300 full-colour illustrations and worked examples, drawing on the author's 45 years of teaching experience in marine dynamics, this textbook provides the ideal introduction to marine dynamics for senior undergraduate and graduate students in marine engineering, and is a comprehensive reference for practitioners in industry.
'This book delivers comprehensive coverage of a subject that receives only partial coverage in other textsThe author's clear and accessible explanations make it an invaluable resource for undergraduates, while simultaneously offering insights beneficial to graduate students. This book offers the best introduction to marine dynamics available!' Carolyn Judge, United States Naval Academy
'The author, distinguished for his contributions to marine dynamics and statistical estimation of dynamic systems, offers an outstanding and insightful primer on the dynamic analysis of marine structures. This book is an indispensable resource, providing immense value to both experienced professionals and students keen to deepen their understanding of the design and analysis of various marine structures. Whether you are just starting out or looking to enhance your knowledge, this book is a must-read in the field of marine engineering.' Xinshu Zhang, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
'This textbook fills a critical need for students and practicing engineers working in ship dynamics. Armin Troesch's tremendous depth of knowledge, attention to detail, and sense of humor make this a wonderful class textbook or reference.' Leigh McCue, George Mason University
'From simple models to realistic systems, a very useful tool to learn marine dynamics.' José Rolando Marín López, Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL)
'This is a brilliantly written essential guide, offering a comprehensive exploration of key concepts in marine dynamics. Troesch enriches our learning with an abundance of examples and wisdom, making it a valuable resource for students and practitioners alike.' Deniz Gedikli, University of Hawaii at Mānoa
Armin W. Troesch, the ABS Professor of Marine and Offshore Design Performance, Naval Architecture, and Marine Engineering at University of Michigan Ann Arbor, has over 45 years of experience in teaching marine dynamics. He has held various engineering, teaching, and research positions including at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, the NSWC Bethesda, MD, and the U-M Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory. He is a Fellow and Taylor Medal recipient of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).
