Buck has also experienced fire firsthand. As a hotshot with the United States Forest Service, he battled wildfires on the ground and from the air as part of helicopter fire-attack crews. Buck spent 15 years in a cabin, heated exclusively by a wood-burning stove fed by wood he cut, split, and stacked himself. Buck has cooked with every form of stove imaginable during his lifetime spent outdoors, but hot coals and flame remain a favorite technique to roast or bake a wonderful open-air feast.
