Lectures on Deixis by Charles J Fillmore

This volume presents the author's view of the scope of linguistic description, insofar as the field of linguistics touches on questions of the meanings of sentences. Fillmore takes the subject matter of linguistics, in its grammatical, semantic and pragmatic sub-divisions, to include the full catalogue of knowledge which the speakers of a language can be said to possess about the structure of the sentences in their language, and their knowledge about the appropriate use of these sentences. In the author's view, the special explanatory task of linguistics is to discover the principles which underlie such knowledge. Fillmore chooses to study the range of information which the speakers of a language possess about the sentences in their language by thoroughly examining one simple English sentence.

Charles Sherlock Fillmore (August 22, 1854 - July 5, 1948) founded Unity in the late 1880s along with his wife Myrtle Page Fillmore, a church within the New Thought movement.

He became known as an American mystic for his contributions to spiritualist interpretations of biblical Scripture.

In 1889, Charles and Myrtle began publication of a new periodical, 'Modern Thought', notable among other things as the first publication to accept for publication the writings of the then 27-year-old New Thought pioneer William Walker Atkinson.

In 1890 they announced a prayer group that would later be called 'Silent Unity'.

In 1891, Fillmore's 'Unity' magazine was first published.

Although Charles had no intention of making Unity into a denomination, his students wanted a more organized group. He and his wife were among the first ordained Unity ministers in 1906. Charles and Myrtle Fillmore operated the Unity organizations from a campus near downtown Kansas City
