The Man in the Iron Mask by Dumas Alexandre; Coward David

The final episode in the saga of The Three Musketeers finds Aramis attempting a royal coup. Philippe, the 'man in the iron mask', has been a prisoner in the Bastille for eighteen years. He is also King Louis' twin brother. Aramis attempts to install Philippe in Louis' place, in turn imprisoning the King of France. D'Artagne must defend his king, even if it means he must kill a fellow musketeer.
Alexandre Dumas was born in 1802, and escaped the hardships of his early life by joining the court of the future king, Louis-Philippe. He was a successful playwright, travel writer and author of children's stories as well as a novelist. Though best known for his historical fiction (The Three Musketeers, 1844, and The Count of Monte Cristo, 1845), other novels dealt with the French wars of religion and the Revolution. He died in 1870.
