Ruby Sings the Blues by Niki Daly

Ruby is so loud, she drives everyone around her crazy. When her teacher suggests that Ruby could turn down the volume, like a sound-blaster, Ruby turns it up instead - and drives away all her schoolfriends. Ruby feels really blue - until Bernard and Zelda, the saxophonist and blues singer living in the basement, offer to give her singing lessons. Not only does Ruby learn to be quieter, but she also learns to sing everything from the sharp, zooming sounds of the city to gentle, breathy notes like an evening breeze, but most of all she learns to sing with feeling - and on the day of the school concert, she's awesome!
Niki Daly's first book, The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Road, won a British Arts Council Illustration Award. It was followed by Not So Fast Songololo, which won a Parents' Choice Award in the U.S. In 1995 All the Magic in the World won an IBBY Honours Award and Why the Sun and Moon Live in the Sky was chosen by the New York Times Literary Supplement as one of their ten best illustrated books. His books for Frances Lincoln include Bravo Zan Angelo, Nola Turkington's The Dancer, Christopher Gregorowski's Fly, Eagle, Fly!, Jamela's Dress, What's Cooking, Jamela?, Once Upon a Time and Where's Jamela?
