Jaan Kross's historical novel Sailing Against the Wind fictionalizes the life of Bernhard Schmidt (1879-1935), an Estonian-born inventor. It is a meditation on national identity, the relationship between history and the individual life, and the mechanisms of the historical novel as a genre.JAAN KROSS (1920-2007) was Estonia's most prominent twentieth-century writer. As a poet, novelist, and short story writer, he portrayed Baltic life under Czarist, Nazi, and Soviet occupation, always having to work around the demands of the censors. His best-known work is a trilogy of novels, Between Three Plagues, set in the 16th century.
