The Sound of a Miracle by Annabel Stehli

Like many mothers of autistic children, Annabel Stehli suffered from the long-held medical belief that Georgie's condition was somehow her fault. For years, she resisted the advice of well-meaning but often misguided friends and doctors that her daughter should be institutionlized. When her husband left her for another woman, and her eldest daughter, eight-year-old Dotsie, died of leukemia after three painful years, Annavel Stehli hit bottom. Then, almost by chance, in Switzerland with her new husband, she heard of Dr Guy Berard's innovative method of normalizing hypersensitive hearing, a treatment which was known to benefit some types of autism. In Georgie's case the results were miraculous. This is the story of courage in the face of adversity and demonstrates the tenacity of the human spirit. Annabel Stehli runs the Network for Auditory Training and is founder of the Georgiana Foundation, which was formed in response to the rapidly growing demand for the Berard method of Auditory Training. Dr Bernard Rimland is a pioneer of auditory training, the author of Infantile Autism, founder of the Autism Society of America and director of the Autism Research Institute.
