Tom Jarrett was a local historian, a former captain of the New Golf Club at St Andrews and a former trustee of St Andrews Links Trust. He was brought up in the town, and after leaving school during the industrial depression of the 1930s he worked for two years as a licensed caddie. He became a journalist and reported on the town's community and golfing scene for 43 years until his retirement in 1980. Tom lived through many of the events in the book and few people could claim to know the Links and their history as well as he did. He died in 2005 aged 89. Peter Mason came to St Andrews in 1975 to take up a management post with an international company based in Dundee. A keen golfer, he started working for St Andrews Links Trust in 1990, just as the extensive development programme was gathering momentum. He was deeply involved in managing the Links for 17 years, finishing his career by overseeing the development of The Castle Course. Peter is now retired and trying to improve his golf.
