Takeout Sushi by Christopher Green

A collection of 17 illustrated short stories set mostly in contemporary Japan that explore feelings of belonging, displacement, and the strangeness of everyday human interaction.

In an innovative, fast-paced company, a man's job comes under threat when a team of robots are brought in to replace the HR department. A husband's search for shortcuts to his domestic tasks goes painfully wrong. Overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, a foreigner takes a weekend break and discovers something other than solitude in the mountains.

Marking Christopher Green's debut adult fiction and inspired by his own experiences, these whimsical slice-of-life tales are full of heart and humour -- perfect for fans of>Convenience Store Woman>and>Before the Coffee Gets Cold.

"Smart, witty, delightful stories by a keen-eyed observer not only of contemporary Japanese life, but of life in generalChristopher Green is a talented writer we should all be reading—and hoping for more wonderful stories from in the future."—David Joiner, author of Kanazawa *and *The Heron Catchers

"Christopher Green has a way of taking a character quirk or a weird experience and turning it into a story that clearly reveals the heart of the character involved. His prose is immensely readable."—Steve Redford, author of Spider Lilies Bleed

"A wonderfully eclectic array of tales told with humour and heart."—Simon Rowe, author of Mami Suzuki: Private Eye

"Takeout Sushi is a charming collection of short stories set in Japan and elsewhere that will remain with you a long time after reading them. So many unexpected twists and turns—a most enjoyable read!"—Diane Hawley Nagatomo, author of The Butterfly Café

"The stories in Takeout Sushi are a delight, witty and smart, the voice clear and direct, the imagination rampant. Green has an eye for the telling detail and a way of looking at the world reminiscent of Roald Dahl at his most mischievous. A brilliant collection."—Iain Maloney, author of The Japan Lights and The Only Gaijin in the Village

"In Takeout Sushi, Christopher Green serves up a delicious cocktail of reflections that capture the quotidian details and anxieties of modern life. The observations are often wry, but the clear prose of the text ensures that they go down smoothly."—Kelly Quinn, author of Japanese History You Should Know

“Oscillating between the ridiculous to the sublime, Christopher Green’s stories depict wonderful moments of impulsive mischief and shared moments of humanity that break through the pervasive rhythms of life, like rays of sunlight emerging on an overcast day.”—Jake Kendall, author of The Vanitas & Other Tales of Art and Obsession

"Why isn’t there more fiction about office life? I found myself asking this question as I devoured Christopher Green’s sharply written stories which often feature men at work in Japan. Green has the ability to turn the most ordinary of situations—a salaryman ironing his pants, a commuter picking up objects dropped on the train floor—into an unexpected and entertaining tale. Takeout Sushi is a triumph from a fresh perspective."—Suzanne Kamata, author of The Baseball Widow and The Beautiful One Has Come: Stories

"Takeout Sushi is a wonderfully varied short story collection. The stories here range from the speculative to the realistic, but they’re all united by sensitively written characters, and offer a unique glimpse into life in Japan (and other places too). These are fine short stories with some brilliantly unexpected twists."—Jenna Warren, author of The Moon and Stars

Chris Green was born in Middlesborough, UK. He has also lived in South Africa, Germany and, since 1994, Japan, where he works for an IT company.
