The new edition retains the tried-and-tested structure of the lessons but has been fully updated. New features of this book include an English-Thai vocabulary to go alongside the existing Thai-English vocabulary and a 'taking it further' section directing the reader to further sources of Thai - websites, books, etc. The language notes have been expanded, the exercises improved and more reading material in Thai script added. The page design has been improved and section headings given in English to make the course easier to use for the self-access learner. The accompanying recording has been increased to two accompanying cassettes or CDs amounting to approximately 150 minutes of listening material. The CDs and cassettes are available separately or in a pack with the book.

David Smyth spent several years teaching at universities in Thailand before taking up a post as Lecturer in Thai at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
