Transatlantic Triumph and Heroic Failure by Tim Collins
An account of heroic failure that has all the ingredients of a great story - transatlantic travel, record-breaking crossings, disasters, emigration, the American Civil War and great expectations dashed. The Atlantic Steam Navigation Company, 'The Galway Line', was launched in June 1858 with high hopes. Today there is no evidence in Galway docks that it was once the 'Liverpool' of Ireland.
On Saturday night last the Circassian sailed from GalwayShe had on board 342 passengers, of whom 108 were first class. 170 persons who applied for a passage could not obtain room. The Irish Times, Sept. 21, 1859.
Tim Collins is a librarian at University College Galway. His previous books include Floreat Hibernia, the standard reference work on RL Praeger, and Decoding The Landscape. His main interests are natural history, and maritime science and history.
