Tal Alonspike lives with her family in the Forest of Drul, isolated by a vast expanse of haunting prairie. They eke out a frugal life, harboring a secret, watching shadows lengthen across the grasslands. Tal never wants to leave her beloved forest, until a dying stranger comes out of the west. Change and terror cling to his heels like a shadow, until even the Forest of Drul is home no longer. In forgotten back closets of the world's darker corners, there is a flutter of movement. As Tal's family is suddenly launched back into the affairs of the wider world, others step in, a few to hunt with her, but most of them are on hunts of their own. Yet the success of their journeys hinge on the completion of hers.In meanwhile, Twist stirs in his hole: a monster never visible in the light. But in the dark, he can be heard breathing.
