The White Ally Toolkit Workbook by David W Campt

How does a white person who aspires to be an ally against racism talk to their friends and family who are in denial about racism against people of color? The White Ally Toolkit Workbook gives people concrete guidance about how to respond a wide variety of statements that racism-denying white folks make everyday. In addition, the workbook presents a sequenced curriculum that an ally can use if they want to purposefully change someone in the circle of influence as well as reflection and self-assessment tools that will help allies see themselves more clearly. Dr. David Campt has provided consultation on engaging groups of people around issues important to them for more than 20 years. After attaining his doctorate from UC Berkeley in City Planning, he became a senior policy advisor with the President's Initiative on Race, where he was responsible for identifying promising practices in race relations and organizing dialogue efforts on behalf of President Bill Clinton. Throughout his career, he has helped groups focus on a variety of topics including strategic planning, conflict resolution, creating more inclusive decision-making, leadership succession, cultural competence, and many others. His clients have varied widely, and have included the United States military (Navy and Coast Guard), large corporations, international organizations, foundations, federal, state, and local governments, universities, national associations, and large and small non-profit groups (such as AARP, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the YMCA, and the Western Justice Center). He has designed and facilitated discussions ranging from multi-day retreats for small groups to large-scale summits involving thousands of people. This is his second book-length attempt to convey his insights about the keys to having more productive interpersonal interaction. His first book, The Little Book of Dialogue for Difficult Subjects (with Lisa Schirch, 2007), provides practical guidance about how individuals and organizations can use skills of dialogue to better solve shared challenges. David is considered a national expert on issues of diversity, inclusion, and social equity. The website for this aspect of his work follows. He does much of his consulting on inclusive decision-making and stakeholder engagement through The DWC Group: Dialogue. Wisdom. Collaboration. In his spare time, David is an avid skier and snowboarder. He has recently taken up rollerblading as a non-winter activity for going fast.
