GARDEN DECORATION FROM JUNK Reviews

With today's recycling fetishes, it makes sense to reuse as much as possible in whatever way presents itself. Gardeners have long recycled things from broken pots turned sideways to accommodate plants which need free-draining conditions, to using prunings as pea sticks and plant supports and utilising all sorts of waste packaging for seed sowing. Leeann MacKenzie presents over 40 novel ideas that can be made either from household junk or skip findings. Scouring car boot sales and charity shops can bring to light many interesting objects that with a bit of imagination and flair can be turned into an attractive garden feature. Some of Leeann's finds however do not strike one as being junk - the antique birdcage would be an excellent, if highly improbable, find together with the church pew. Many of the ideas are quirky, original and attractive such as the old cutlery mobile, the colander hanging baskets and rejuvenated skip lights. But some are distinctly odd such as the book plant stand and car wing mirror bird scarers. Inspiration ranges from plant holders to more ambitious projects such as recovering old deckchair frames with bamboo and making water features from metal buckets. From pergolas constructed of ladders to wind chimes created from old bottles there is something to appeal to everyone and for all ages. Some of the instructions are sketchy and some of the writing unnecessarily verbose but overall it is an interesting book which will open ones eyes to all sorts of possibilities from other people's junk. Just don't overdo it and turn your own garden into a junk yard!
