'This is an excellent book that will be a great help to medical students and ALL doctors - not only those interested in orthopaedics.

Many years ago, I was most impressed by (and quite reliant upon) 'Concise System of Orthopaedics' by Apley and Solomon. It was with some eagerness that I seized upon the book under review by the same authors. I was not disappointed. Both are consultant orthopaedic surgeons and have managed to combine their clinical experience, theoretical knowledge and expertise with a great gift of communication to produce a beautiful book about physical examinations of patients geared specifically to musculo-skeletal conditions. The follow the procedure, adopted by many of the tutors at the Northern Institute, of LISTEN - LOOK - FEEL - MOVE when examining patients. Their procedures are explained lucidly in everyday language and supplemented by some of the best colour photographic illustrations I have ever seen. This book is an excellent companion and reference for students about to start the advanced courses at the Institute and a 'must' for recently qualified practitioners. It encompasses the back and the major peripheral joints of the body. Step by step procedures are detailed and accompanied by the superb photographs.

This book, which is written by eminent orthopaedic surgeons, is an excellent read for those experiencing the world of orthopaedic examination for the first time. It achieves its goal in appealing to medical students and junior doctors. It is a pocket-sized book which is pragmatic, unpretentious and has a plethora of excellent pictures to demonstrate hand grips for examination and some common joint deformities. The book is logically presented, with each chapter covering (a) major joint area. The book's strength is that it presents the examination in a clear, concise and methodological way which is easy to read and is embellished with fantastic diagrams... It is... an excellent text that should be a 'must' for physiotherapy undergraduate courses, particularly for students engaged for the first time in studying orthopaedics or anatomy. It would also be useful for junior physiotherapists or those working for sports clubs to have as a revision guide, particularly for the ligamentous and other functional tests. In summary, it is a 'cut and dry' text that will facilitate the understanding of orthopaedic assessment of joints. It is easy to read and supported with an abundance of colour pictures.
Manual Therapy
A very helpful guide to clinical orthopaedic examination. Beautifully illustrated with a brief supporting text...the photographs are clear and speak a thousand words apiece. Highly recommendable to students on the Emergency Medicine, Trauma and Locomotion (EMTL) Block of the MB BS Course.
