Basil of Caesarea by Marvin Jones

Basil of Caesarea (329-379 AD) was a Greek Bishop in what is now Turkey. A thoughtful theologian, he was instrumental in the formation of the Nicene Creed. He fought a growing heresy, Arianism, that had found converts, including those in high positions of state. In the face of such a threat he showed courage, wisdom and complete confidence in God that we would do well to emulate today. About Early Church Fathers: this series relates the magnificent impact that these fathers of the early church made for our world today. They encountered challenges similar to ones that we face in our postmodern world, and they met them with extraordinary values that will encourage and inspire us today.

Encounter(s) Basil as a lover of the Triune God and His church

-- Steven A. McKinion (Assistant Professor of Theology and Patristic Studies, Southeastern Baptist Theology Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina)

I am thankful for Marvin Jones and this new work.

-- Jason G. Duesing (Provost and Professor of Historical Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, Missouri)

Introduces us not just to the subtlety and real acuity of Basil's thought but to a man of great warmth and affection... challenges us as well as instructs us.

-- Michael Ovey ((1958-2017) Principal, Oak Hill Theological College, London)

All of the makings of an important story that Evangelicals need to hear... Dr. Jones has done... Evangelicals a great favor in writing this lucid account.

-- Michael A. G. Haykin (Professor of Church History and Biblical Spirituality, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky)

Christians, whatever their tradition, need to know their forebears in the faith from the earliest generations of the Church. These holy men and women struggled to articulate the faith in a world that thought them foolish, misguided and often mad. They wrote mighty expositions of scripture, struggled to proclaim their faith and some were martyred for their efforts. Raised up by God to witness to the gospel they are ever deserving of our attention. Basil of Caesarea was one of the great figures in the fourth century who struggled to show that the Gospel proclaimed Christ to be God with us, and no creature. Marvin Jones succinctly and clearly introduces the man, his world and his faith. Marvin’s valuable book helps us to see the Christ of the gospels more clearly, and to understand how deeply God has worked in the history of the Christian community. Read and be inspired!

-- Lewis Ayers

Jones through this work traces the theologians and theological issues leading up to Basil's day, providing a rich background for the settings which framed his thought. The work is richly researched and documented. Sidebars are provided to define key theological terms or movements. Basil of Caesarea provides an excellent introduction to the thought of Basil the Great. Highly recommended for theologians and pastor theologians.
