His functions as khalifarasullullah, included\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eamong other things keeping the Islamic society and state founded\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eby the Prophet (SAW) on the right track popularly termed as the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eminhaj al-nubuwah. The khalifah had to follow in all his designs\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eand works the Quran and the sunnah. He was not divinely\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eappointed as was the case with the Prophet (SAW); rather he was\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eselected or elected by the Muslim Community. He officiated the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eProphet (SAW) in the enforcement of the shariah, without any\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eright to making any change in it. The law-making authority, \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehowever, rested with the Islamic ummah as a whole of which the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ekhalifah was the foremost part.
