The Hard Road to Klondike by Valentine Iremonger
First published in Irish, this is Michael MacGowan's account of the fate dealt to him by 'the Wheel of Life'. After emigration he worked his way across the USA. He then took part in the Klondike gold-rush and vividly recounts his adventures. Home on holidays in 1901 he fell in love and used the money from the gold to buy land and a home.
Sean O hEochaidh took down this story from Mici MacGabhann when collecting for the Irish Folklore Commission in the 1940's. It was later edited for publiscation in Irish by Proinnsias O Conluain and published in 1958. This translation by Valentin Iremonger was first published in 1962 and has been unavailable for many years.
