In Spain's Secret Wilderness by Mike Tomkies

This is an account of observations of exotic wildlife made in the vast, sparcely-populated Iberian hinterland where tourists seldom venture. At first the author's attention was drawn to the rare birds - among them the mighty lammergeier, the endangered black vulture, the imperial eagle, the black stork and others that are almost extinct elsewhere in Europe. Then as he penetrated into the the mountains and lonely marshes he discovered the isolated haunts of the Spanish ibex, the mongoose, the wild boar, the bear, the wolf and the lynx. The author's experiences led him to contend that Spain could justly claim not only the richest wildlife in Europe but also one of the most enlightened conservation programmes in the world. A television tie-in has been arranged on ITV.

Mike Tomkies was a renowned naturalist, writer, and Hollywood film journalist who spent 35 years living in remote and wild locations around Scotland, Canada, and Spain. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland appointed him an Honorary Fellow in 1988. He wrote a two-volume autobiography as well as a number of best-selling nature books. In 2016, he passed away.
