Providing enough background to be rigorous, without being exhaustive, it gives students good preparation in the techniques of modern petrology; a clear and organized review of the classification, textures, and approach to petrologic study; and then applies these concepts to the real occurrences of the rocks themselves. The text limits the theory to the extent that students can practice it on real occurrences—without such excessive detail that the course becomes more like chemistry than geology. The goal throughout is for students to be able to apply the techniques—and enjoy the insights of the results—rather than tinker with theory and develop everything from first principles.
