Knots on a Counting Rope by Bill Archambault Martin

In Knots on a Counting Rope, Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault tell a poignant story about a boy's emerging confidence in facing his blindness in this beautiful children's picture book illustrated by Ted Rand.

By the warmth of a campfire beneath a starry night sky, a Navajo youth named Boy-Strength-of-Blue-Horses listens to the tale of his birth from his grandfather. Although blind, the boy learns that he has the strength to cope with his condition and meet any challenge that comes his way.

The powerful, spare, poetic text is done full justice by Rand's fine full-color illustrations. The love, hope, and courage expressed are universal.-- Booklist (starred review)

Bill Martin Jr., a former elementary school principal, and now a teacher, writer, and poet holds a doctoral degree in early childhood education. His many books-- among them Knots on a Counting Rope, Here Are My Hands, The Ghost-Eye Tree, and the best-selling Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?-- are a testament to his ability to speak directly to children.

Born and raised in Kansas, Bill Martin now makes his home in Texas. He divides his time between writing and leading educational workshops throughout the country.

Eric Carle was born in the United States, but spent his early years in Stuttgart, Germany, where he studied art and design at the Academy of Applied Art.

Eric Carle's many innovative, risk-taking books have earned him a place in the canon of children's literature. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? was the first book he illustrated; he then went on to write and illustrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider, and The Very Quiet Cricket, as well as many other books for children.

Eric Carle works in a studio near his home in western Massachusetts.
