The Moral Work of Anthropology by Hanne Overgaard Mogensen

Looking at anthropologists at work, this book investigates what kind of morality they perform in their occupations and what the impact of this morality is. The book includes ethnographic studies in four professional arenas: health care, business, management and interdisciplinary research. The discussion is positioned at the intersection of ‘applied or public anthropology’ and ‘the anthropology of ethics’ and analyses the ways in which anthropologists can carry out ‘moral work’ both inside and outside of academia.

“The book give many new insights about what the authors name the ‘moral economy’ as well as many ‘aha’ moments for me as an anthropological reader and raises good questions about what is happening to the discipline in a changing world” • Catherine Haase, Aarhus University

“This was one of the most compelling and insightful volumes of work I’ve engaged with for a long time. The topic of the moral constitution of anthropological practice, and indeed anthropologists themselves, by way of ethnographic studies of anthropologists working outside traditional anthropological university labour settings, is timely, important and incisive, and the chapters rich and well formulated as a whole.” • Melissa Cefkin, Alliance Innovation Lab, Silicon Valley

Hanne Overgaard Mogensen is Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen. She is the author of Secrecy and Responsibility in the Era of an Epidemic: Letters from Uganda (Palgrave, 2020).
