You May Ask Yourself by Dalton Conley

The First of the Free compiles the first three stanzas of The Ballad of Bayan Stormhammer. It is the coming of age of one of Vosteros' oldest fables; a legendary Subarii whose sole purpose is to seek out those who have fallen from grace and bring them back to the fold or, failing that, eliminate them in order to protect the realm.

He didn't start strong. He started as the first free-born of his kind, the Gyvuu. Raised to honor a special rule of conduct referred to by the Subarii, Vosteros' greatest warrior race, as The Code, Bayan's early life is dedicated to becoming one of the Valiant. Once he finally enters the ranks of the Subarii, however, things are not what they seem.
