Summary

In a dystopian world, society is divided into different factions: Dauntless (the brave), Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), and Erudite (the intelligent). When Tris turns sixteen, it is her time to choose which faction to join. This is a lifelong decision that can never be reversed.
It is usual for children to choose the same faction as their parents, so generations of families stay together. However, occasionally a child feels drawn to a different faction and must make the difficult decision to leave their family behind.

Divergent Summary

Divergent (Divergent, Book 1) by Veronica Roth

Tris chooses Dauntless and must say goodbye to her parents and brother for good. The initiation into the faction is much more brutal than she could have possibly imagined, and she begins to wonder whether she has made a terrible mistake.
Little does Tris know that the factions hold dark secrets, and she will have to face even more challenging decisions as she begins to unravel them. With the help of her friends and a mysterious boy who both threatens and protects her, she fights to stop society from unravelling altogether and save the ones she loves.
Divergent is the first of three books in the trilogy and won Favorite Book of 2011 in the Goodreads Readers Choice Awards, as well as scooping up the senior category of the 2014 Young Reader's Choice Award. Divergent was also top of the list in the Teens' Top Ten Vote, sponsored by YALSA. The book series has also been made into films.
