Making Sense of Business Summary

Making Sense of Business: A No-nonsense Guide to Business Skills for Managers and Entrepreneurs by Alison Branagan

Enterprising individuals and business managers often feel that they need to acquire new skills and brush up on existing ones in order to achieve targets, make money and avoid making elementary mistakes. Making Sense of Business, with a foreword by Sir James Dyson, will help you to do just that, with expert guidance on key skills such as selling, presentation and negotiation and advice on developing your self-confidence and learning to work creatively. There is no advantage in devising an imaginative sales pitch if no one has the confidence to carry it off. There is equally no benefit in having good interpersonal skills if after striking a deal, the contract is signed without a thorough understanding of its contents, only to discover later that the agreement is a bad one, full of loopholes and liabilities. With illustrated mind maps and creative exercises, Making Sense of Business encourages fresh ways of thinking, helping you to learn new skills and achieve success.

Making Sense of Business Reviews

"There's much to be said of the book's approach to clear communication. At Dyson we use simple sketches to share ideas. Alison's book mirrors this approach by using drawings to explain concepts and processes in a digestible way. As competition around the world intensifies, the need for good ideas is more important than ever, as is what to do with them next. Alison's book is the perfect place to start." Sir James Dyson "This is a thoroughly useful and easy to understand book which teaches new ways to think about business." Business Executive "Common sense is a wonderful thing and Branagan has lots of it. Her thinking is neat and organised and you can't help thinking that anyone who has let their business start to run them rather than the other way around will benefit simply from the experience of reading this book." theiet.org "...is a well written basic introduction to the skills needed to improve your managerial effectiveness. It covers such key areas as: Managing a Team; Networking; Selling; Time Management; Presenting; Negotiation. Full of useful creative excercises, Mind maps and studies." Professional Manager May 2010 "The ambitious aim of this book is to help enterprising individuals and business managers to acquire new skills and build on existing ones, such as negotiating, presenting, managing time and networking. With a raft of creative exercises, the emphasis is on helping you learn new skills and achieve successful outcomes." First Voice May 2010 "...I can genuinely say that I found Making Sense of Business a really sensible and enjoyable book which would be useful to lots of potential entrepreneurs. From practical advice and support, to inspiring quotes and ideas, the book is a good read for people considering starting up - particularly those who might be put off by books that are too tub-thumping-ly entrepreneurial in their approach. It tackles the approach head on that you have to be a go-getting, self-starting, ferocious individual to start up, and is really aimed at creative people who have the ideas, but perhaps lack some of the business acumen needed to get off the ground." Enterprise UK Blog, June 3, 2010 Making Sense of Business is and enjoyable , easy-to-follow little booked that is jam packed with useful information essential to business owners - particularly new , or young, business owners. It is ideal for 'Bookophobes', as the language is clear and basic. Furthermore, its content is divided into small sections and is broken up by activities, diagrams and inspirational quotes, making it a quick, memorable read. Shell Livewire April 2010
