The Spanish Sailor Summary

The Spanish Sailor by Brid Mahon

This is the story of the ghost of the Spanish prince who has haunted the mountains above the Balsket Sound in Dingle County Kerry for more than five hundred years. In September 1588 one of the ships of the Spanish Armada, the Santa Maria de la Rosa sank in the Blasket Sound. There was one survivor, a Spanish sailor who told of a king's ransom in gold bullion and jewels that had gone down with the crew. This treasure has never been found. Twins Conor and Kathleen, along with their sparky Aunt Bee, spend a holiday on the Dingle Peninsula and are drawn into the quest for the Spanish sailor. The book teems with adventure, magic, villainy and heroism. There is a ballad singer, a donkey called Flash, a wily fox, time travel to the time of the Fianna, magical cures.. and much much more. Not since Patricia Lynch has an Irish children's book been so weird and wonderful, so energetic, so entertaining.
