The crew of the "Essex" have taken to the boats in the mid-Pacific in pursuit of a whale when another, larger whale sinks the "Essex". Forced to sail on in the small boats, the crew die one-by-one, until only Captain Pollard and one crew member are rescued off the coast of Chile.
