Cultural Awareness in Nursing and Healthcare Summary

Cultural Awareness in Nursing and Healthcare: An Introductory Text by Christine Hogg

Cultural Awareness in Nursing and Health Care explores many sensitive issues of culture, race and ethnicity as they affect patient care. Its main focus is on the presentation of theoretical issues which are then discussed in relation to case studies and the reader's own clinical practice experiences.

Issues explored are: health beliefs; religion and care; mental health and culture; women's health in a multicultural society; child and family centred care; caring for older people; cultural assessment; death and bereavement; and cultural diversity and professional practice.

Throughout the book there are exercises, designed to stimulate discussion and shared practice, that the reader can undertake either on their own or with colleagues. Many of the chapters are based on the authors' own teaching experiences and will be an invaluable resource for those involved in clinical education.

Cultural Awareness in Nursing and Healthcare Reviews

A broad overview of cultural diversity as opposed to an indepth analysis of any one culture/ethnic group and in so doing encourages the reader to both recognise and celebrate difference. A number of appendices, relating to the 'beliefs and practices' of six of the more well known religions, provide a helpful source of 'quick' reference. Relevant contact addresses and web sites are also included making this book a valuable text for all those who are involved in care provision.
Carole Gleeson, Senior Lecturer, University of Cen

I would recommend it to any nurse engaged in any part of professional practice.
Journal of Community Nursing

Although this book is written for nurses, any health professional working with a diverse community will really find it useful reading, including dietitians.
Journal of Human Nutritian and Dietetics.

Nice, relevant, easily accessible.
Mr P Ene, Bath Spa University College

This text covers the core issues in relation to cultural awareness. It also includes a chapter on cultural perspective to family centred care which is very beneficial for a pediatric programme.
Carol Barron, Childrens University Hospital, Dubli
