The book opens with a look at life during the Hungry Thirties and the run up to war, when life for the average northern working class person could be a battle for survival. Other chapters include Manchester's 'Home Front': the effects of rationing, make-do-and-mend, the black market, the Home Guard, evacuation, entertainment, work and leisure as well as air raid precautions and civil defence. The selection of photographs from the archives of the Manchester Evening News features many images of war-torn Manchester that have been previously unpublished.
