Morris uses the device of DIY as a way of getting beneath individual religions to see if there is an essential core of religion pure and simple, shared by all humans - those who seek God in church, temple and mosque, and those who have, as he puts it, concluded a pact of mutual non-agression with God. Among the conclusions he comes to are that people create their own faith according to their individual needs, and that the doctrines of professionals are not nearly as important as the way we lead our lives - for this is how faith becomes a reality.
