Leeds, the biggest city in Britain with only one football club. That monopoly creates a passion in the local team Leeds United had famous managers like Major Frank Buckley and Raich Carter. And back in 1948-49 season the debut of a man many critics rate the greatest player seen in English football - the legendary John Charles. The makings of the modern Leeds was sparked by the appointment of Don Revie as manager in 1961. Revie inspired the creation of a sporting dynasty. No club in modern football history can match the number of home-grown players Revie had in his championship-winning squads of 1969 and 1974. Leeds won the FA Cup for the first time in their history in 1972 - the centenary of the world's most famous club knock-out trophy. After Revie left in 1974 the club had the crazy 44 day reign of Brian Clough. Howard Wilkinson's appointment as manager in 1988 to lift the club out of the Second Division and in the last season of the Football League Leeds were again crowned champions in 1992. About David Walker

David Walker began reporting on Leeds United in 1973. He covered Leeds for The Sun from 1982-85 and then became the Daily Mail's man in Yorkshire. Leeds revival under Howard Wilkinson coincided with David's promotion to the Daily Mail's chief football news reporter. He joined the Mail on Sunday as deputy sports editor, still covering Leeds affairs, in 1997. In 2000 he became an executive director of Leeds United. He is now the Sunday Mirror's sports editor.
