Challenging Lesbian and Gay Inequalities in Education Summary

Challenging Lesbian and Gay Inequalities in Education by Debbie Epstein

This work is concerned with developing education for social justice and challenging inequalities in society. Through a series of historically-located articles ranging from personal stories, through examples of "good practice", to theoretical analyses of the interweaving of heterosexism, sexism and racism, the work traces the ways in which oppressions are constructed and played out within and through the system of schooling and through education policies. The majority of contributors are lesbian or gay activists and educators. The work should be of interest to those involved in the education system and in studying education, and to those interested in cultural studies, gender and the study of masculinity, lesbian and gay studies, sociology and women's studies.

Challenging Lesbian and Gay Inequalities in Education Reviews

"Challenging Lesbian and Gay Inequalities in Education is an important addition to discourses in educational inequality...its most central contribution lies in the possibilities it encouragesfor future research and writing. It certainly provides multiple sitesfor dialogue and debate and as such represents a significant contribution to an excessively unrepresented and under-represented field." - Discourse "I read this book returning from an NUT conference on anti-racism where it was argued for whiteness being seen as part of ethnicity when working for anti-racism. Through theory and personal histories this book shows the need for hetrosexism to be examined when dealing with sexuality." - Education Review
