Cell and Molecular Biology of Vertebrate Hard Tissues Summary

Cell and Molecular Biology of Vertebrate Hard Tissues: Symposium Proceedings by G.A. Rodan

The cellular and molecular details of the formation, maintenance and repair of bones and teeth are now important areas of biomedical research. Techniques for isolating hard tissue macromolecules, including molecular cloning, have been perfected, and the ability to identify and manipulate cells associated with the formation and remodelling of hard tissues has been developed. In particular, it is possible to culture cells with retention of in vivo activity. This book brings together the latest research in the cellular and molecular biology of bones and teeth and considers its applications to medical and dental practice. The participants at the symposium were drawn from diverse fields, such as cell, molecular and developmental biology, endocrinology, inorganic chemistry and orthopaedic surgery. Subjects covered include: the control of bone formation, resorption and remodelling; osteoblast differentiation and osteoclast activity; factors influencing dental extracellular matrix biomineralization; non-collagen proteins in bone and their function; and hormonal regulation of bone growth, and bone-derived growth factors. The discussion after each paper serves to highlight future areas of research. The genetic basis of bone disease is considered, as is clinical bone repair.
