The Picture History of Great Buildings Summary

The Picture History of Great Buildings by Gillian Clements

Here is the history of the buildings that have shaped the world in which we live, ranging from Stonehenge and the Step Pyramid, to the high-rises that dominate our city skylines today. Each page features one building and looks at its history, its builders and the impact the style had on its contemporaries. Along the bottom is a timeline showing what other buildings were being constructed at that time in other parts of the world and how they reflect the growth of the societies in which they were designed and built.

The Picture History of Great Buildings Reviews

From the world's earliet houses to the latest high-rises in Dubai, this is an information packed guide to the catherdrals, temples, opera houses, parliament buildings, bridges and latterly banks that stand as the important monuments of their time. Illustrated in detail, each is briefly described and set on a timeline that gives a sense of the evolution of building in different places as well as some general background history. The illustrations make browsing fun, while a useful glossary makes this a good reference book too. Guardian Great Buildings is unique in that it provides excellent timelines to show what other buildings were being constructed at the time in different parts of the world, to give an overall picture, which I have not found anywhere else. Armadillo Magazine The excellent glossary and index make this both a riveting read and a superb reference book, a mine of information for both young and old and an encouragement to pursue the subject in the future. Ibby Link The enthusiasm is catching: exactly what a good book should do. School Librarian
