Set in the present-day Czech Republic, this novel traces a year in the life of a Protestant pastor, Daniel Vedra. Ostensibly a happily married father of three, he is beset by spiritual doubt and temptations, both physical and material. A secret love affair leads him to re-evaluate his life.
