The Way to the Zoo Summary

The Way to the Zoo by John Burningham

In this classic child's fantasy featuring John Burningham's delightfully expressive artwork, an unlocked door leads to pandemonium - and one little girl's formidable voice reins in an entire menagerie!

In her bedroom wall, Sylvie spots a door ... and beyond that door she finds a passage ... and beyond the passage she discovers ... the ZOO! Where Sylvie finds LOTS of animals, looking at her! So she decides to bring a few small ones, like a little bear, into her bedroom at night time, just for a cuddle. And then she takes the penguins back for a splashy bath. Once, she even brings back the monkeys but, really, they were too messy. No matter what Sylvie does though, she always makes sure to close the door in her bedroom wall. Until, one day, she forgets...

An utter delight * The Bookseller *
Possibly my all-time favourite author has published his first book in years. As always, his stories are guaranteed to fire little one's imaginations * Angels and Urchins *
Full of imagination and warmth, it delights in the wonder of childhood * My Book Corner *
This is a wickedly fun book and every page is a new adventure. . . I giggled my way through this book. The illustrations are lovely, and the wording is simply perfect for reading aloud and building the suspense. It's all very My Naughty Little Sister and I can just imagine adopting the same voice to read these as my mother used to read those. . . I couldn't pick a single thing to fault with this book. It's brilliant and I wish I could read it again for the first time because that first reading was delightful. Sylvie is ace and I'd love to follow her in further adventures, should she wish to share them with us * Bookbag *
When Sylvie finds a door in her bedroom, the last thing she expects to find is a zoo filled with animals who can't wait to come back and play in her room! Sylvie always remembers to close the door behind her. But one day she forgets and the naughty animals escape and cause lots of mischief! * Mums & Tots *
A magical picture book . . . beautifully illustrated and will allow your child's imagination to run wild * Babybuzz *
John Burningham has been illustrating and writing picture books for over 50 years and it's clear why. As with his other work, The Way To The Zoo is packed with his warm, humorous prose and gorgeously energetic pastel drawings. His sense of fun and ability to put himself in the mindset of other children will make this yet another one of his books your child will want to read again and again. * Junior magazine *
a touching story -- Juila Eccleshare * Lovereading4kids.co.uk *
Witty elegance . . . cannot fail to delight. * The School Librarian *
