Clubs Summary

Clubs: A Lolly Leopold Story by Kate De Goldi

'The clubs epidemic breaks out in March like a giant nit plague. It spreads through our class 'til practically everyone's infected. Not me. I must be inoculated.'Lolly Leopold has a divine teacher called Ms Love. She has a cat called Laughing Stock but he won't qualify her for membership of the Kitten Club. The Harry Potter Club excludes girls, the Lego Club's too violent and she's disdainful of the Barbie Club beauty contests. Will Lolly find a Club to truly belong to?Clubs was the Book of the Year and Picture Book of the Year in the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, 2005.'The wonderful homemade illustrations and text of Clubs describe perfectly the tough, complicated world of primary school, and Lolly's spunk and intelligence give hope to lonely kids everywhere. I love this book. I wish I'd had Ms Love for my teacher.' - Alison Lester'Pure brilliance' - John McIntyre, Radio New Zealand'Jacqui Colley's pictures are a revelation . something of the flavour of Lauren Child but more sophisticated. The news that it's the first of a series is very, very welcome.' - David Larsen, New Zealand Listener

Clubs Reviews

Among the important things you learn at school is something that has nothing to do with literacy, numeracy, making farting noises on a clarinet or growing etoilated plants on blotting paper. Until you work out how to make friends without being a suck-up, faking an interest in topics that bore you rigid or taking part in activities that make you feel bad about yourself, you can't start firing on all cylinders. That's really what CLUBS is all about. It's an appealing read from New Zealand showing that it can take a little time (and serendipity) to find your soulmates. Time Out A former New Zealand Picture Book of the Year award winner and thoroughly deserves this accolade for its humorous, highly relevant and sometimes poignant depiction of peer group pressure. About Kate De Goldi

Jacqui Colley I grew up in Africa, climbing trees, swimming in the sea and making huts in the vines, and now I live in New Zealand in a house with a higgledy-piggledy garden by the sea. My garden is like a jungle. An eel lives in the darkest part of the stream and lots of native birds chatter away to me when I am in my studio. Working on picture books is like leaping back to my childhood and a chance for my fantasies and memories to collide.'Jacqui is a painter who exhibits regularly and has work in private collections internationally. She is also a director of a graphic design and new media company. Kate de Goldi I spent my childhood living and breathing stories. When I wasn't reading, I was writing plays for my sisters, my 42 cousins and my classmates and organising performances. Peter Pan and Wendy lived I believed in a gnarled tree at our gate, and Owl from Winnie the Pooh lived in a cherry blossom. I spent many hours plotting and planning
