Summary

Alphonse Courrier possesses all the might reasonably make a man content: a prosperous ironmonger's business and a position of respect in his Auvergne village, a dutiful, coolly beautiful wife who runs an irreproachable household, two healthy sons, and a hidden mistress - "the ugliest girl in the village but probably the happiest".

The Alphonse Courrier Affair Summary

The Alphonse Courrier Affair by Marta Morazzoni

Alphonse Courrier possesses all the might reasonably make a man content: a prosperous ironmonger's business and a position of respect in his Auvergne village, a dutiful, coolly beautiful wife who runs an irreproachable household, two healthy sons, and a hidden mistress - "the ugliest girl in the village but probably the happiest".

Prying eyes and wagging tongues, however, are the life force in a small community, and though Courrier thinks he can play the village gossips with the same skill he brings to the card table, life has a way of dealing the hand you least expect ...

The Alphonse Courrier Affair Reviews

Marta Morazzoni is a writer of great refinement... sharply focused on individual characters caught in the web of fate and history * New York Times *
Marta Morazzoni's devastating novel, set in a tiny French village, is fast-paced, gripping and resonant with emotions usually associated with Greek tragedy -- Patricia Duncker * New Statesman *
Marta Morazzoni's cool, clever but tragic intrigue... deftly strips away the veils of delusion that cloak polite society in turn-of-the-century provincial France -- Boyd Tonkin * Independent *
A profound and haunting epitaph -- Amanda Hopkinson * Independent on Sunday *
Reminiscent of Francois Mauriac's unsparing dramatisations of passions held in check until they inevitably, catastrophcially erupt... Morazzoni's best book yet * Kirkus Reviews *
