Arcadian Thames Summary

Arcadian Thames: The River Landscape from Hampton to Kew by Mavis Batey

This work is based on the much-acclaimed survey "The Thames Landscape Strategy: Hampton to Kew". Each of 12 stretches of the river is given a map and described in detail along with its wildlife habitats, historical origins and suggestions for its future. Anyone visiting or living in the area should find that they have a useful companion guide to hand. New for this edition are a series of illustrated essays by the author on some of the people and places to be found along the route. She writes of the mercurial David Garrick, of Pope finding Arcadia in Twickenham, Horace Walpole, Turner and Thomson. The newly restored privet garden at Hampton Court, Ham House, Henrietta Howard's Marble Hill, Syon, Richmond and Kew all come into the story.

Arcadian Thames Reviews

Anyone walking the banks of the Thames today between Hampton and Kew will understand the beauty and fascination of the area: how it has inspired artists, poets and writers to the extent it has. A quiet, haven away from the noise and bustle of the city yet within only a few yards of business developments and residential estates. Cows grazing alongside the busy highroads of Richmond, boats sliding silently along the waters, it seems unbelievable this exists within such a built-up area. This beautifully illustrated book stems from "The Thames Landscape Strategy: Hampton to Kew" launched by the Minister for Local Government and Planning in 1994. The project, to conserve this 11 mile stretch of river, will ensure the legacy of the past is managed for the future and it's magic never lost. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the landscape has obviously changed greatly over the centuries with widespread settlements and its eventual connection to central London itself. This work takes 12 particular stretches of the river and analyses their history and natural habitat to give a clear picture of its heritage, present day status and possible future conservation. Hampton Court, Teddington Lock and Strawberry Hill intermingle with the literary greats and alumni of their times: Walpole, Pope, Thomson and Garrick, all giving a rich cultural diversity to this beautiful 'suburb' of London. For residents, social historians and topographical collectors, this is the perfect addition to the shelves, its gems of information perfectly complemented by the attractive engravings, etchings, pictures and photographs. - Lucy Watson
