Summary

This book highlights the opportunities and the challenges of introducing hydrogen as alternative transport fuel from an economic, technical and environmental point of view. Through its multi-disciplinary approach the book provides researchers, decision makers and policy makers with a solid and wide-ranging knowledge base concerning the hydrogen economy.

The Hydrogen Economy Summary

The Hydrogen Economy: Opportunities and Challenges by Michael Ball

Responding to the sustained interest in and controversial discussion of the prospects of hydrogen, this book strives to reflect on the perspectives of a hydrogen economy in light of the global energy challenge, in particular the question of how to meet the growing demand for transport energy in the long term and how to secure sustainable energy for transportation. This book stands out from other publications by its emphasis on setting the scene for hydrogen, and the comprehensive coverage of all aspects related to the hydrogen subject. It aims to provide a reference and compendium about hydrogen that should be of interest to anyone who wants to catch up on the status of the hydrogen discussion, look up a specific aspect related to hydrogen, or understand how hydrogen comes off compared to other mobility solutions. The book should appeal to a fairly broad readership: academia, policy makers and industry.

The Hydrogen Economy Reviews

Review of the hardback: 'This multi-disciplinary book significantly broadens the perspective on the prospects of hydrogen as a universal energy vector and fuel, and provides a very important addition to the policy debate over future sources of transportation energy and the role hydrogen can play for the decades to come.' Herbert Kohler, Chair of the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology
Review of the hardback: 'The book is an important contribution to the discussion about the role of hydrogen in the future energy system, and should be of great interest to a broad readership, from policy makers to the general public.' Mustafa Hatipoglu, UNIDO-ICHET
Review of the hardback: 'I strongly recommend this excellent book to energy engineers, environmentalists and decision makers, as well as those interested in the future of humankind and the welfare of the planet Earth.' T. Nejat Veziroglu, President, International Association for Hydrogen Energy
Review of the hardback: 'This is a useful book: it is also a serious book. This book provides a comprehensive summary of our current state of knowledge about transitioning to a hydrogen economy. It is thus an excellent springboard from which we can and should continue our efforts to explore, assess, and depending on our judgments, further pursue the hydrogen option.' John B. Heywood
Review of the hardback: ' a useful addition to the literature ' Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation

About Michael Ball

Michael Ball studied Industrial Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe, where he also received his Ph.D. in 2006 in the field of energy-system modelling, developing a model for hydrogen infrastructure analysis, which served as a tool for producing the European Hydrogen Energy Roadmap. After a stay as a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovative Research (ISI) in Karlsruhe, he joined Shell in the Netherlands in 2006. He has held various positions as project CO2 advisor, before becoming involved with hydrogen business development at Shell. Dr Martin Wietschel is the co-ordinator of the 'Energy Economics' business unit at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, Karlsruhe. He is a Professor at the University of Karlsruhe and a Lecturer at the ETH in Zurich. His work focuses on socioeconomic and technical research, mainly in the field of energy and the environment.
