This work examines one of the most productive periods of artistic invention and describes the work of the Impressionists, the Symbolists and artists such as Courbet, Rodin and Gaugin. The rise of Art Nouveau and its influence in architecture and design is also covered. The author also looks outside France, to artists who influences and were influences by French art such as Van Gogh and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
