Early days: the first UK imports of Japanese bikes up to about 1965, including information on popular models and comparisons with contemporary British and European machines. Main section features separate chapters on the 'big four' makes - Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. Discussion of bikes from each manufacturer, featuring 'road test panels' on iconic models such as Honda CB750/4, Kawasaki H1, Kawasaki Z1, Suzuki Super Six and Yamaha 650 twin. Chapter on 'sixteener' sports mopeds, which were the catalyst for the surge in bike sales in the 1970s. Many of today's classic enthusiasts (including the author!) began riding on a Honda SS50, Suzuki AP50 or Yamaha FS1E, with L-plates flapping in the breeze. 'New era' bikes from around 1983 onwards, such as the Kawasaki GPZ 900R, which are now attaining classic status. Reference section giving specifications for main models covered.
