The Glass of Heaven Summary

The Glass of Heaven: The Faith of the Dramatherapist by Roger Grainger

Drawing on his interdenominational background of actor, priest, counsellor and dramatherapist, Roger Grainger examines the connections between dramatherapy and the spiritual dimension of life.

While noting that dramatherapy is not attached to any specific religion, and that some approaches to psychotherapy are overtly non-religious, the author finds subliminal points of contact both in moments of encounter and in methods of communication. He suggests that these contacts are both direct - with dramatherapy providing the framework for a potentially endless succession of images - and indirect - through the arousing of imagination. The book, like the author's career, is eclectic, and draws together philosophy, history, spiritualism and practical experience of dramatherapy work. It offers exciting conclusions in an original field.

The Glass of Heaven Reviews

`thought-provoking Grainger can certainly convert a non-believer to his faith in the power and value of drama therapy and how far it has comeit is affirming to know that there are those with such faith and the ability to pass it on to others.' -- Dramascope
`a book which offers conclusions in an original field...explores the connections between dramatherapy and religion, no easy task since the two are not only scientific disciplines to investigate but also experiential activities to be lived. Dr Grainger achieves this by moving between theoretical analysis and lively case studies. This juxtapositions engages both mind and imagination, and gradually draws us into the faith of the dramatherapist.' -- Counselling
`This is a book which offers exciting conclusions in an original field... The author examines the dramatherapist's role as one who facilitates both faith and healing, at the point where religion and medicine meet.' -- Catholic Herald
`Spirituality - the grey area generally uncategorised in psychological healing, is explored with verve and clarity in this book. The author leads us to recognise and appreciate the spiritual dimension of dramatherapy and its methods. For those looking to utilise drama in a variety of therapeutic settings, this book provides valuable, thought-provoking insight into the effects and power of this very underestimated field.' -- Therapy Weekly
