Chasing the Eighties Summary

Chasing the Eighties: The Ultimate North American Roadtrip by Spencer Austin

Nostalgia is a plague of the modern generations. Unlike those before us, there are videos, photos and the internet to help us wallow in how good the past was and how crap the present is. For Spencer and his two friends Tom and Luke, even watching "Back To The Future" had become a painful reminder of what was no more. The only way to cure nostalgia, it seemed, was to find the source of the problem...and say goodbye properly. So, they threw in their jobs as TV producers and hit the road on a three month, 30,000 mile romp around North America in search of the heart of their eighties; chasing new memories to replace the old. From the Police Academy building to breakfast with The A-Team's Murdoch to beers with Chunk from The Goonies - they did the lot. They ate omelettes with Louis Gosset Jnr after shaving their heads and spending the night at the Officer and a Gentleman barracks. Learned the art of cunnilingus from Bubba Smith (Hightower in Police Academy), played football against a vampire hunter from The Lost Boys, were taught the Karate Kid 'crane kick' by its creator and faked orgasms in the very seats Harry and Sally lunched in. They saw Rusty from National Lampoon's European Vacation fall arse-over-tit and witnessed Breakfast Club teacher Paul Gleason proclaim the movie as just 'kinda silly'.And in more way than one, Spencer had seen it all before; a Greyhound tour of the USA seven years before haunted him with memories of the estranged love of his life, Elle. This rite of passage journey was to be a total soul cleanse as he realised, finally, that it was over...but not without high drama, tears and sick in Las Vegas. "Chasing the Eighties" is a journey of cure and healing: a trip under the skin of what the eighties mean to not only those who grew up in them, but those from other generations who've likewise been snared by the Goonies, the Ghostbusters and The Guttenberg. Surely, over one hundred locations and twenty-five interviews with film and TV stars will dampen those nostalgic twinges once and for all!

Chasing the Eighties Reviews

A piss-funny book about living the 80s celluloid dream and enduring the cinematic nightmare. Part stalker-fanboy-diary and part Jackass-Rough-Guide-to-movie-America, Spencer Austin faked an orgasm in Harry and Sally's favourite deli, got drunk in the Tom Cruise singalong bar from Top Gun and attempted some nut crushing dance shapes at Dirty Dancing's Lake Lure. The Time of His Life or What? And he'd never felt this way before - Paul Ross. I found the book a riveting read...I heartily recommend it... its perfect for the trapped Child of the 1980's in all of us - childofthe1980s.co.uk. I am so jealous of the trip these guys went on...If you are a fan of the 80s, you will definitely want to check this out - oldschool.tblog.com.
