Where Kids Go to School Around the World Summary

Where Kids Go to School Around the World by Stepanka Sekaninova

In this book we visit 15 schools in various corners of the world to see how kids learn in different countries or cultures.

Kids go to school all around the world, but the types of schools or the school systems vary from place to place. Would you like to see where kids in Japan or in Himalayas go to school? Would you like to know how a school on a boat works? Or what a school in a rainforest looks like? This book will show you that while some schools are pretty similar to what you know, others can be completely different and surprising.

In each chapter a local kid poses as a guide who introduces us to the type of school or a school system of a certain country or culture. Kids will learn that every nation has its own way of learning and that difference is what makes each culture special.

Where Kids Go to School Around the World Reviews

Selected for the CBC's 2023 June Hot Off The Press Reading List (https://www.cbcbooks.org/cbc-book-lists/june-2023/).

The book is educational and even surprising at times. Each chapter has stationed a local child guide and narrator to describe what their specific school is like making the book relatable and friendly to the reader. This delightful book is a celebration of education and I highly recommend it! -Storywraps

This fascinating book gives children an inside look at schools around the world, from Australia to Uganda, including their main features (conservation of nature is essential when you go to school in the rainforest) and the role of teachers (teachers are also coaches as a sports school). A fun way to build empathy and curiosity about the lives of children around the world, as well as to give children a fresh perspective on their own unique schooling. -All Done Monkey

Sekaninova brings readers to schools around the world to see how children learn. Each page spread shows a location in a central illustration. Short blurbs (paragraphs) surround this illustration with various pieces of information shared from a student's view. Each is numbered to match something in the drawing so readers have both the text and a visual to learn from. Well written for students and families to learn together. -Netgalley-Librarian

I really like the idea of this book! There are many great details about schooling around the world. It is a great resource to see how we are alike and how we are different. I enjoyed the layout on each page and the illustrations. -Netgalley-Educator

I give Where Kids Go to School Around the World five out of five stars! -NetGalley-Reviewer

The authors made some very thoughtful and unusual choices in the fifteen schools presented here. The format is interesting and an adult and a child reading it together could have many conversations based on each school. The information is presented well and the illustrations are lovely.

It's also the kind of book that could pull in a reluctant reader and for this reason, I believe it would be a solid addition to any school classroom library. Additionally, it would be a good book for a family considering a move so that children could see how different one school can be from the next. -NetGalley-Reviewer

This is such a great concept for a book! Explore schools not just around the world, but in special circumstances. My family especially enjoyed learning about school on a boat, in a refugee camp, and in the rainforest. Each two-page spread shows an illustrated classroom and has about 10 paragraphs highlighting the unique attributes of that particular school. We all learned a lot and look forward to implementing some of the ideas into our own homeschool curriculum! -NetGalley-Reviewer

This book was a fun adventure around the world and a great look into the daily lives of school kids. I didn't realize there were so many alternatives to regular schooling. From sports schools, to monks training up in the mountains, to children in hospitals and refugee camps. This book truly covered a wide variety of learning institutions around the world. One thing that stood out to me is that so many of us during the pandemic got to experience first-hand what it is like for kids in the Australian Outback to learn remotely. I particularly enjoyed learning about the schools on boats in Bangladesh. That is such a cool concept and it even has a floating playground! -NetGalley-Reviewer
