Feminist Social Psychologies Summary

Feminist Social Psychologies by Sue Wilkinson

This wide-ranging international collection provides a showcase for the richness and diversity of contemporary research in feminist social psychology. Including contributions from leading feminist social psychologists in the UK, continental Europe, North America and Australasia, it reviews the growth and development of the field over the last ten years, highlights theoretical and methodological advances, and looks forward to its future within - and beyond - the academy. Contributing authors utilise a wide variety of theoretical frameworks (ranging from feminist empiricism through social constructionism to psychoanalysis) to examine key feminist topics, such as sexual violence, pornography, femininity and beauty, emotion, social class, and sameness/difference. They also demonstrate the use of a broad range of quantitative and qualitative methods in feminist research. These include: questionnaires and rating scales, voice-relational methods, discourse analysis, memory work, biography, focus groups, Q-methodology, and meta-analysis. The eclecticism of this book makes it an ideal teaching text for undergraduate and postgraduate courses on social psychology, psychology of women/feminist psychology, gender issues, critical psychology, and research methods. It will also be of value on other social science courses and in a multidisciplinary women's studies context.

Feminist Social Psychologies Reviews

I would recommend it as a book to dip into. - British Journal of Clinical Psychology ...an invaluable collection. - Psychology of Women Section newsletter This collection of papers is an impressive demonstration of the diversity of contemporary international research in the area of feminist social psychology, and provides a welcome reminder of the achievementsmade over the last 10 years. - Gender and Education Feminist Social Psychologies clearly achieves its goal ofillustrating the richness and vitality of feminist social psychologies today. It convincingly challenges mainstream psychology's traditional characterization of women as inferior, and demonstratesthe maturity and confidence within the field of feminist psychology that allows us to see our diversity as strength. - Psychologyof Women Quarterly This collection is a 10-year update of its predecessor volume, which had its title in the singular. While the title changeis intended to reflect increasing diversity of theories and methods, what is remarkable about this book is the satisfying coherence of approach across the papers. This marks it out from manycollections of papers. - History and Philosophy
