Dear Joan by Tony Ross
Before being posted to the Mediterranean during the Second World War, airman Tony Ross briefly met a young woman called Joan Charles. They started to write to each other and Dear Joan uses these letters to chart the development of their relationship. Joan's letters reveal the problems of daily life on the Home Front while Tony describes the challenges of duty in the desert and his experiences during his travels in the Middle East. Both share their dreams for the future in a reconstructed, post-war Britain. Through its use of this unique correspondence, Dear Joan brings to life a love affair that blossomed across the miles while also providing a valuable historical account of everyday life during the Second World War.
