Present Tense Summary

Present Tense: Book 1 Danny Sharp Series Time and Again: Danny Sharp Series Time and Again by Yen Rickeard

The Danny Sharp series Time and Again is a fast-paced adventure story with strong characters set in the realistically portrayed Late Iron Age and the modern day, with a sprinkling of sci-fi to link them. The differences and similarities between the two ages are manifest, but the characters and the changes in their lives dominate the fast-moving saga. The everyday lives of both times are shown in this gripping drama; violence is depicted realistically, as necessary, neither dwelt on unduly nor glamorised. The first five books were written with those who have difficulty reading in mind. They have a Flesch Kinkaid level of 75 to 80, without losing fluency or pace. (Reading age from 11 content suitability from 13.) Torn between the excitements of the past and his obligations in the present, Danny must weave his way through intricate social tangles in both times, avoiding, wherever possible, violent solutions. At nearly fifteen Danny thought he and his family were ordinary. When his house explodes, leaving his parents missing, his ordinary life seethes with suspicion and confusion. D I Raynes is working on the case, but also seems attracted to Danny's Aunt Moira. When she too goes missing, Danny and school-friend Kelly discover the hidden portal to the past, and he realises he has been mistaken all his life. The secret language, which he had thought just a game, was the language of the ancients; his whole family was deeply entwined with the past. When Danny finds himself in Iron Age Seahome, he and Kelly join the warriors, under their Chief Dugal, to rescue Danny's aunt and parents from whoever has taken them. Danny and Kelly find themselves in a dangerous situation, with unknown rules, and seemingly different morals. The pace of events leaves little time for thinking as they search and then battle to rescue Moira. Danny and Kelly, in quite different ways, have to fight for their own lives. Camped in darkness on the hill above the fight, still shaken by the violence and their part in it, Danny comforts Kelly, but is even more determined to help free his mother the next day, whatever it takes.
