Books by Jason Thompson

Jason Thompson is a historian who specializes in the Western encounter with the Middle East, ancient and modern. His first book, Sir Gardner Wilkinson and His Circle (1992) was a collective biography of the first cohort of British scholars to work in Egypt in the early nineteenth century. Since embarking on a long-term project concerning Britain's great orientalist, Edward William Lane (1801-1876), he has published two major editions of Lane's works, the previously unpublished Description of Egypt (2000) and a definitive edition of the classic An Account of the Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians (2003). He is currently completing a book about the classical scholar Sir William Gell.
