Juan Pablo Villalobos was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1973. His first novel, Down the Rabbit Hole, was the first translation ever to be shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award (in 2011) and the book has been translated into 15 languages. Quesadillas is his second novel. He writes regularly for publications including Granta, English PEN's PEN Atlas blog, World Literature Today and The Coffin Factory, including fiction, film reviews, translations and travel writing. He has researched such diverse topics as the influence of the avant-garde on the work of Cesar Aira and the flexibility of pipelines for electrical installations. He lives in Brazil and has two children.
